The threesome fantasy: how to talk about it without breaking anything

By Mia & Marco · 6-min read · Earn flames 🔥 as you read

One night, on the second glass of wine, Marco blurted out: "Have you ever thought about… us and someone else?" There was one of those silences you can hear. Mia looked at him, raised an eyebrow and said: "Yes. And since when have you?" We laughed, talked until two in the morning and discovered something: the conversation brought us closer than any plan could.

This article isn't here to convince anyone of anything. It's so that, if that fantasy has been floating around in your head, you know how to talk about it lovingly, without fear and without breaking what you already have.

Fantasy or plan?

1. When you picture the scene, what excites you most is…

2. If it were possible tomorrow, you'd feel…

3. How much have you talked about jealousy?

1. It's more common than you think

If you've ever thought about it, you're not strange and nothing is "missing." Surveys on fantasies agree that imagining a third person is among the most common fantasies, for men and women alike. Fantasizing is part of the erotic imagination: the brain plays with new ideas precisely because they're new.

Having a fantasy doesn't mean your relationship is incomplete. Often it means the opposite: you feel so safe that your mind lets itself wander.

Spicy note: sometimes what excites isn't the third person, but feeling desired more intensely. Ask yourselves what's behind the fantasy. The answer may surprise you.

2. A fantasy is not a plan

This is the most important idea in the article. A fantasy lives in the imagination, where everything goes perfectly, no one feels insecure and there's no "morning after." Reality brings real emotions: nerves, comparisons, jealousy, questions. Some couples live it and it goes well; others discover they liked it much more as a fantasy.

Both are fine. The only thing that doesn't work is jumping from fantasy to plan without many conversations in between.

Tell each other the fantasy like a bedtime story, whispering, lights off. Just words, just the two of you. Many couples find that telling it is already the whole experience.

3. How to bring it up without it sounding like a complaint

Mia whispering a secret to Marco
Fantasies are best told in a low voice.

Timing matters. Don't bring it up in the middle of an argument, or right after making an Oops!, when someone feels vulnerable. Pick a calm night, with time and good humor.

Start with yourself, not with the other person: "I have a fantasy I'm a little shy to tell you" opens more doors than "What if we invited someone?" Make clear from the start that it's a conversation, not a request. And ask: "Do you have a fantasy you've never told me?" Make it an exchange.

Use the magic sentence: "I don't want to do it, I just want to tell you about it." It takes all the pressure off and leaves the door open to play with the idea.

4. The jealousy check: total honesty

Jealousy isn't a flaw, it's an emotion. Ignoring it is what hurts. Before thinking about anything real, ask yourselves the hard questions, separately first and then together:

How would I feel if my partner looked at someone else with desire? What would I need to feel safe? Is there anything that would be an absolute "no" for me? Am I picturing the scene from my own desire or from my partner's?

If either of you feels uncomfortable, that's valuable information, not a failure. And if either says "no," that "no" is respected: no pushing, no guilt trips and no bringing it up every week.

Spicy note: consent isn't a "yes" squeezed out after lots of insisting. It's an eager "yes." Anything else is a no.

5. It can stay a fantasy (and that's perfect)

Mia and Marco laughing in bed
The best part of that night: laughing at how nervous we were.

We, for example, decided ours stays in the imagination. And you wouldn't believe how much it has given us. A shared fantasy can feed your intimate life without ever leaving the bedroom: talking about it, imagining it together, playing with it while you make an Oops!.

Some couples, after a lot of talking, decide to explore it in real life. If that's you, do it with clear agreements, protection always (read Protection without killing the magic) and the freedom for either of you to stop at any moment. That decision is yours alone: we don't judge or push here.

With the blindfold from Tied in Love, the one who can't see lets their imagination run… while the other whispers the story. A fantasy for two voices.

🤔 Myth or truth?

Tap each card to find out.

Myth. Fantasies aren't a review of your partner. They're the imagination at play.
Truth. Sharing it and leaving it there is a complete, perfectly valid option.
Myth. A "no" is respected. Insisting breaks trust, which is exactly what makes play possible.

✅ Before talking about the fantasy

Tick it together. It's saved on this phone.

Our advice: the most powerful fantasy is being able to tell your partner anything without fear. If starting is hard, read How to talk about what you like. Whatever you decide afterwards matters less; what you gain by talking stays.
